VictoryEncased
In my quest (cue Man of la Mancha - I, Don Quixote) I have collected numerous Victory
related encased coins. Above is an image of a typical 1945 victory obverse. Next to it is an encased for the 1946 Iowa State Fair. The scrolls on the State Fair encased look very close to the scrolls on the typical Victory
encased. It is also interesting to note that the reverse of the Iowa encased is: SARGENT & CO. FEEDS
. It is no coincidence that there is a 1945 Victory
encased for SARGENT & CO. FEEDS
. The edge is also missing the denticles that are found on the typical 1945 Victory
encased.
Obverse reads: VICTORY / WORLD PEACE
Reverse reads: VACUUM CLEANER SUPPLY HOUSE / CHATTANOGA / 718 CHERRY ST.
The above 1946 Victory
encased is identical to the type 1 obverse and the reverse is typical. The difference is the date of the coin. This has a 1946 coin. For all intents and purposes it appears to be as made
not replaced. In assisting Bryan Ryker in transcribing the Osborne Coin Company work orders it became clear to me that Osborne used whatever coins they had on hand when encasing cents. There were orders that specified the date, but they were the exception, not the rule. The plain fact is that we do not know what year the Victory
encased were made, only that they continued a 1945 cent. That is until several 1946 cents showed up in Victory
encased.
The next encased with Victory
on it is this 1941 D encased cent.
Obverse reads: KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE
Reverse reads: VICTORY CLOTHES / FOR / MEN AND YOUNG MEN / 10 PAY PLAN / 10 N. 19TH STREET / PHILA., PA.
This store obviously wanted to capitalize on winning WWII. Although this has a 1941 D cent, it probably was made in 1942. One of the interesting things about this encased cent is that it's diameter is larger than the typical encased. The Victory
encased are 40MM in diameter. The Victory Clothes encased is 43MM in diameter. It fills a 2 x 2 where the typical encased cent is 40MM and leaves space around the encasement when placed in a 2 x 2.
The next image is of an encased 1946 cent. The piece was to commemorate the Shrine Victory Convention
Obverse reads:SHRINE VICTORY CONVENTION SAN FRANSCISCO JULY 1946
Reverse reads: KEEP ME AND YOU WILL HAVE GOOD LUCK
This piece has several interesting features. First the slogan
is on the obverse side of the coin. It is 40MM in diameter which is consistent with the Victory
encased. No denticles on either side. The obverse side has a Shriners hat and sword.
The next piece has a 1945 cent and the obverse is a standard KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE
inside a horseshoe with the four leaf clover at the bottom. A classic standard obverse (IMHO).
Obverse reads: KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE
Reverse reads: THE CART WHEEL / STAMFORD CONN. / OUR VICTORY / 1945
Front of the matchbook cover - Reads: TELL. 4-5934 / Where ALL The Italians Meet / 235 Main Street / Stamford, Con.
Reverse of matchbook cover - Reads: ITALIAN COOKING / OUR SPECIALTY / Your Favorite Drinks / Mixed Here / Service with a Smile
Interior of Matchbook cover - Reads: ATMOSPHERE THAT IS DIFFERENT / Your Favorite Dish / Prepared Here / Fine Wines & Liquors / Always Remember / All Our Beers And Ales / Drawn From / STERLING SILVER LINED TANKS / No Pipes / Our Sanitary Way For / Your Protection / John J. Palermo, Prop.
The above images of the matchbook have been edited to remove unnecessary wear which ads nothing to the images. The matchbook is from 1950. No other information is available about the Cart Wheel. I do find The Cart Wheel
an interesting name for an Italian restaurant.
The final Victory
encased is a pretty beat up piece from Moweaqua, Illinois. I bought it for the Victory
encased part and because I also collect Illinois encased. It is similar to the Shrine Victory
above in that the obverse of the coin is on the slogan side of the encasement.
Obverse reads: MOWEQUA GRAIN COMPANY / "A VICTORY TOKEN" - MOWEQUA, ILL.
Reverse reads: KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE
So there you have it. My collection of Victory
related encased.
